Promotion of climate and resource protection
Based in Hamburg, the MATSEN FOUNDATION was established in 2018 and supports projects in the field of climate protection and resource conservation. The founder is MATSEN CHEMIE AG, a global vendor of chemicals, with its headquarters in Hamburg. The company was founded in 2016 and has the vision to offer its customers all products and services exclusively CO2-neutral by 2030 at the latest.
Time for action
The founder classifies climate change as one of the greatest threats to humanity and the diversity of life on earth. The effects and intensity of the consequences vary considerably from region to region: while, according to current knowledge, comparatively moderate consequences of climate change will be felt in Central Europe in the foreseeable future, many regions, particularly in developing and emerging countries, are already seeing dramatic effects (floods, droughts, landslides) for the people living there. These effects will continue to increase in the coming decades.
The purpose of our Foundation
It is therefore very important to the founder that, in the interests of inter- and intra-generational justice (use of natural resources neither at the expense of other regions nor future generations), projects in the areas of resource conservation and climate protection in particular are initiated, financially supported and accompanied when it comes to implementation.
The purpose of the Foundation is to be realised through:
- educational projects in the areas of resource conservation and climate protection;
- sustainable afforestation measures and forest conversion of native forests to increase their resilience to the consequences of climate change;
- research projects in the areas of resource conservation and climate protection (focus: substitution of chemical raw materials of fossil origin with those made from renewable raw materials); and
- cleaning up natural spaces and bodies of water.

Project: Forest conversion and reforestation in the Harz Mountains.
Project partner: Bergwaldprojekt e.V.
The MATSEN FOUNDATION has been supporting the Bergwaldprojekt e.V. since 2020. One of the main topics of the non-profit organisation is the conversion of public forests with indigenous trees to strengthen resilience to storms, drought and bark beetle infestation - all consequences of climate change.
